  • Abstract
This paper deals with the phenomenon of electromechancial wave propagation in large power systems and determining the location of a fault by taking advantage of the Wide Area Measurement System and Phasor Measurement Units. Such an application requires very comprehensive and detailed research. However, in order to solve a complex problem, one must first solve several sub-problems. A proposal for the solution of one such problem is presented in this paper. A new detection mechanism for detecting the arrival of an electromechanical wave is given that uses characteristic points on a wave in a manner which is independent of the wave amplitude and its frequency. The results look promising and indicate that this issue should be investigated further in the future.
