Abstract
Due to increasing wind and photovoltaic in-feed and market liberalization in Europe, the transmission system operators face new challenges in terms of secure operation of the system. On the first hand, wind or photovoltaic in-feed is forecasted and due to the errors related to forecasts, the power flows of lines cannot be computed exactly in the operational planning. On the second hand, market liberalization increases volatility of power flows of lines and, thus, causes a need to consider wider areas. In this paper, we use probabilistic DC power flow computations to study propagation of wind power in neighboring control areas in multi-area power systems. In addition, we propose a robust re-dispatch that considers uncertainties of power flows of lines with a given confidence level. We also discuss additional data exchange needed among transmission system operators to take these issues into account. In simulations, we have used the IEEE RTS 48 test system.
