Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. Characteristics of ozone production have been investigated by irradiation of intense, pulsed relativistic electron beam (IREB). The 1.8-m long gas chamber is filled up with buffer-gas-balanced O/sub 2/ gas mixture, and is irradiated by the IREB of the beam energy of the order of MeV. A volume of the gas chamber is 13.4 l. To investigate the characteristics of ozone production by the IREB, nitrogen, helium, neon, and argon are used as the buffer gas. It is found that /spl sim/ 340 ppm of ozone is produced by firing 10 shots of the IREB with the ozone production yield of 10-20 g/kWh in the nitrogen buffer gas. In the argon, helium, and neon buffer gas, we found the strong enhancement of ozone production. The ozone concentrations increase to /spl sim/ 530, /spl sim/ 550, and /spl sim/ 660 ppm at 10 shots of the IREB in the argon, helium, and neon buffer gas, respectively.
