Abstract
This paper addresses the need for the exploration of utilization of maintenance free electric machines in non-conventional energy conversion systems. In stand alone wind energy conversion system meant for rural areas, cost effective and maintenance free electric machine as generator is envisaged to be an integral part of the system. The suitability of switched reluctance machine as generator for stand alone rural wind energy conversion system has been explored through design and analysis. The design equations, selection of pertinent topology, static and transient magnetic characteristics and study of thermal and vibration characteristics has been presented. Finite element analysis has been extensively used to refine as well as to analyze the finalized design.
