Abstract
This paper discusses system design issues for regional (0-3000 km) undersea systems. Margin and cost requirements lead to different choices than for transoceanic routes. In particular, the following topics are discussed: the use of terrestrial terminals; the possibility of longer repeater spans; and the use of long Raman amplified shore spans to reduce repeater count and to enable repeatered festoon network architectures.
