Abstract :
Twenty-five years of research on the tokamak confinement concept have revealed a number of intractable limitations. An important lesson drawn from the recent history of the tokamak is that development beyond the proof-of-principle level should not proceed unless and until all of the physical processes responsible for radial transport, confinement time scaling, equilibrium, and stability are understood and confirmed experimentally
