Abstract :
Development of DC grids is among the most significant technical challenges in power engineering. They have crucial role in integrating large offshore renewable power parks. This article studies DC fault performance and capital costs of several DC grid topologies. Firstly, a five-terminal theoretical DC grid topology is presented without any DC/DC converter. Then we evaluate 3GW (3+3 terminal) DC grids having n-1 redundancy with respect to DC cable and VSC converter faults. The study shows that DC grids with DC/DC converters may have best technology readiness and performance while estimated costs are similar to DC grids with hybrid DC CBs.
