Abstract
Models of different classes of friction forces encountered in machines and mechanical systems are described in this paper. The structures of the models are determined from the control engineering point of view. The way adopted in the paper to model frictions is mainly for the purpose of establishing a friction library for simulation software design. The library can be used as an independent tool for system analysis and also a part of general software package for computer aided simulation and analysis of mechanical systems. The work described in this paper is a part of the research project "Software development for pneumatic actuator system simulation and design in a virtual environment". The different classes of frictions can be flexibly chosen as the components for the software.
