Abstract :
The bursting phenomenon in the echo cancellation of telephone systems is investigated. The setup studied is an adaptive hybrid system with an echo canceller (EC) at the near end and a fixed feedback at the far end. Two effective approaches are proposed to ensure that bursting does not happen. Both are based on checking the cross-correlation between the input and the error of the EC. Bursting is avoided by stopping the drifting of the coefficients of the adaptive filter. The effectiveness of these two approaches is illustrated by extensive computer simulations using realistic hybrids.<>
