Abstract
The authors present an algorithm for adapting the size and geometry of a subarray (of a much larger array) to optimize the detection and resolution performance of the subarray. This allows the efficient and accurate use of high resolution direction of arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms. The two source case is analyzed in detail and a critical distance definition is developed that plays a major role in analyzing the resolution performance of an array. A simple procedure is presented for designing a planar array yielding high resolution performance.<>
