Abstract
Manufacturing business is news again. The need for a strong manufacturing base is high on the public agenda. But what do we have to build upon? Is manufacturing today lean and mean, or is it suffering from malnutrition? Ingersoll Engineers´ annual surveys of manufacturing business give some of the answers. There are grounds for optimism: competitive needs are widely understood, and innovation and hard work are creating more world-class businesses. There are new methodologies to apply, from finance to human factors. Many initiatives are available that should and need not be starved. Above all, in British manufacturing today, the attitude to managing change is the crucial competitive issue.
