  • Abstract
The high electromagnetic interference (EMI) environment onboard ships creates a communications challenge for emerging low-cost systems. Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems provide the best potential for development of a low cost, robust, interference resistant communications link which is suitable for shipboard operation. This paper analyses the technical feasibility of developing an interference resistant version of a VHF LEO satcom terminal. The results of our analysis demonstrates that a LEO satcom unit can be fabricated which rejects interference from virtually all shipboard out-of-band transmissions while retaining sufficient receiver sensitivity to ensure reliable data connectivity
