  • Abstract
In this contribution, a theoretical model of buffer constraints for rate-distortion (R-D) optimization in mobile video communications is presented and analyzed. The analytical model is based on quantitative buffer underflow time and allows for various video transmission scenarios over ad-hoc networks. By considering the play-out probability and the actual "filling" state of the buffer, the constraints estimate the packet loss effects on the displayed video due to buffer underflow. The distortions in the video due to these buffer errors are then categorized and the overall increment in the R-D performance is substantiated. Furthermore, the model accounts for other key implementation issues and the dynamic changes in real-time ad-hoc channel conditions.
