Abstract
The goal of OpenGIS specification is to solve the geodata sharing and interoperable geoprocessing. This paper first made a study of OpenGIS specification, emphasized on SFO (the simple feature specification for OLE/COM), then proposed an embedded GIS component based on the simple object model and on the characteristics of embedded devices. The component was designed by using of object-oriented technology and realized in Java. As a high-level common component, the component, which includes geometric object module, map display module, map query module and file conversion module, can provide the basic functions of two- dimensional geographic information system and can be applied flexibly and efficiently to many different fields. Finally, as an example of the component application, a mobile navigation system was constructed on PDA devices. The system runs well on Windows CE and Linux operating systems and is independent of the type of PDA, which shows that the component is platform-independent and can achieve a certain degree of geospatial information interoperation.
