Abstract :
In the static buffer management design for industrial networks, determination of buffer sizes is a very important problem. This is because buffer sizes have considerable influence on message segmentation and efficient buffer space utilization. We discuss two different buffer organizations-Monoblock and Multiblock, and for each organization we present a mathematical formula to determine optimal buffer sizes. The optimal buffer sizes can be obtained by solving an NP-complete combinatorial optimization problem. Finally we give an example of determining optimal buffer sizes for MiniMAP buffer management by using our formula and we conclude that Multiblock with a certain number of variable-sized buffers is a suitable buffer organization for industrial networks based on the consideration of data characteristics of industrial networks.<>
