Abstract :
Describes a client-server distributed computing model which is established on an Ethernet-based LAN. Simple PCs are used as clients, and a high-performance i486 CICS processor workstation with an i860 RISC coprocessor is used as the server. Remote procedure call (RPC) facilities are designed and implemented for the above distributed processing system, to support remote compilation and remote program execution. An i860 RISC networked compiler is also designed to facilitate the use of the RISC server. The system is designed under the ISO/OSI reference model with modularization. It is also kept small and simple in its development, testing and debugging. The use of the RPC mechanism facilitate a high degree of programmer transparency. The client-server model is successfully built and its performance is evaluated. It is found that systems using the powerful RISC servers have superior performance compared to a PC running local applications.<>
