Abstract
Jeju Island has long been served by an HVDC link to the main Korean peninsula. A second HVDC link will soon be added and once this is complete, the original HVDC link will also be refurbished. Since its original installation, synchronous condensers have provided reactive power support to the HVDC converters. As part of the overall upgrades taking place on Jeju Island, two new +50/-25 MVAr synchronous condensers are being installed to replace the aging existing units. This paper reports on the new synchronous condensers and their support role in the overall island upgrades.
