Abstract
This paper reviews developments over the last 30 years which have enabled power generating units to provide their present frequency response capability. There is a particular emphasis on changes which have been made since the privatisation of the UK electricity supply industry in order to meet the requirements of ancillary service contracts. PowerGen has made enhancements to unit load control, implemented plant response tests and co-operated with National Grid Company (NGC) in the development of monitoring facilities
