Abstract :
In this paper, an experimental Free Space Optics (FSO) communication system is implemented and used to characterize the free space channel under different UAE weather conditions. The setup is composed of discrete components that provide for flexible implementation and testing. The effects of fog and sand on the communication link are investigated. Furthermore, the optical signal attenuation for different laser wavelengths is measured. Experimental data showed that optical power attenuation in the channel is more severe in the presence of small scatterers than larger ones. Specifically, water particles present in fog will cause more power loss than sand particles, both types of scatterer are commonly characteristics of UAE weather. Finally, demonstration of image transmission using the experimental system showed that FSO channel can be modeled as a two-state channel.
