Abstract
A schematic design methodology for sliding mode control is presented. State observation is not necessary. When the sliding mode is achieved, the output tracking error decays in an exponential rate. An alternative approach is also proposed which retains the positive features of classical sliding mode control methods but uses a continuous control law so that the inherent control chattering due to high frequency switching in the controller is eliminated.<>
