Abstract :
A new technique for high frequency, high-speed transient measurements using capacitor voltage transformers (CVT) in high voltage systems is examined by simulation and field tests. It was shown that the new technique, which is based on the measurement of currents in CVTs can be used to monitor fast transients without any need for special high voltage instrument transformers or wide bandwidth voltage dividers. This was confirmed by field tests where a very close correlation was achieved between the measurements by the new technique and those obtained through resistive voltage divider.
