  • Abstract
This paper elaborates a very effective way by which analysis and simulation of power electronic converters can be taught to undergraduate students using the concept of Finite state machines (FSM). The application of Matlab/Simulink-Stateflow is developed for simulating, learning and analysing of power electronic systems. Stateflow is a tool provided in Matlab that allows us to use the concepts of FSM that is widely being used by electronic engineers for designing purposes. With the help of its graphical user interface and some basic knowledge of circuit theories, the corresponding SIMULINK models of the switching converter circuits can be easily constructed. The most powerful feature of Stateflow which is not provided by most of the softwares is the ability to animate and also that it has got many handful tools for debugging. Both of these properties helps the students to clearly visualize and analyse the power electronic systems in a much effective manner. Students can actually see how the system would behave and at what instant of time which state is active, how the transitions are working and we can also see the value of the outputs at any particular instant of time. In this paper the open loop hybrid modelling and simulation of the well-known dc-dc converters named BOOST and RESONANT ZCS converters, using Matlab-Simulink -Stateflow, is presented in detail.
