A pilot installation of substation LAN with interconnection to the corporate communication network

This paper describes the implementation of substation automation in the Finnish national grid and especially the latest pilot installations concerning local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) technology in a high voltage (HV) substation. It also brings forward some problems and lessons learned from the pilot installations. The main advantages and drawbacks of the LAN/WAN implementations is presented together with the company´s rather conservative policy, partly due to the lack of standardisation.
