Abstract :
A new type of switching-mode power supply, which contains no magnetic devices, is developed. By avoiding inductors or transformers, the DC/DC power converter presents high power density, small size and low weight. The controlled energy conversion is realized by using switched capacitors (SC). The switching frequency is fixed and the driving signals of the externally-controlled switches are dictated by a PWM feedback circuit. The circuit is simulated by applying the averaged state-space method. Both simulation and experimental results prove that the new boost regulator presents high efficiency, small output voltage ripple and good regulation for large changes in the input voltage and/or load. The SC-based power supplies can be manufactured in IC technology for small powers.<>
