Abstract
This paper presents a fuzzy logic based phase sequencer (PS) for traffic control. The phase sequencer operates in conjunction with the fuzzy logic controller for traffic systems (FLC-TS). While the FLC-TS decides the desirability of a change of phase, the PS decides the next phase among the possible ones. A simulation software called traffic signal control (TSC) was developed to simulate the operation of an isolated intersection and compare its performance under pretimed, FLC-TS, and phase sequencer plus FLC-TS (PS+FLC-TS) control. Preliminary results show that fuzzy logic controllers use more effectively the intersection space by allowing more vehicles to cross the intersection in the same period of time than the pretimed controller. The PS+FLC-TS performed better than the FLC-TS in this respect. In terms of the delay, the fuzzy logic controllers performed better than the pretimed, with the FLC-TS providing the lower delay
