Abstract :
Electronic semiconductor devices can be used for AC, DC, AC/DC and Hybrid Circuit Breakers with the following advantages: (a) No arcing between electrode surfaces and no restrike is present. (b) No pollution resulting from ionised gases or oils. (c) Low maintenance and high reliability due to the absence of moving parts, contact bounce and erosion. (d) Small volume, light weight, fast response, and low running cost. The main disadvantages are that semiconductor device failure results in short circuit, therefore proper design and protection is essential. Also the initial capital cost of a hybrid breaker may be higher
