Abstract :
Underwater acoustic communications currently offer low data rates. This work outlines the reasons for this, and informed by communication system developments in other fields, envisages means by which data rates can be improved. The improvement can be obtained by operating at higher frequencies and using links of shorter range. It then examines the tasks required to fulfill this vision, and reports on progress towards such improvement.
