Abstract :
Guided modes in a planar air waveguide surrounded by anisotropic metamaterial are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the bulk and surface guided modes can be supported by the waveguide under certain conditions. The type and the number of the guided modes are found to be determined by the material and geometry parameters. The lossy cases are also investigated, which reveals that the small loss in the metamaterial makes little effect on the guided modes. The analysis also convinces that some guided modes are backward waves.
