Abstract :
Norwegian Sea buoy observations are used to validate the ERS-1 satellite radar remote sensing method. The buoy observations were made between October 1991 and February 1992. Mesoscale wind fields from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute have been used for validation of the scatterometer winds. The second source of in-situ data used is the network of NOAA buoys near the USA east and west coasts. The satellite scatterometer transfer function has been evaluated; the wind vector being related to the radar cross-section as a function of incidence angle and azimuth. The C-band scatterometer model is calibrated precisely. A method for gridded wind fields has been developed
