Abstract
A method is introduced to reduce the order of the external area model of power systems. During the modeling process of the external area, the connection variables, voltage and current vectors in the public coordinate system, are selected to describe the interaction between the study area and the external area. In order to adapt to the linear model reduction methods, the external area model is transformed to be a standard linear model by expanding its input variables. Based on the proposed external area model, the balanced residualization method is adopted to reduce the order of the model. Simulation tests show that the proposed method can reduce the order of the external area model to a great extent and preserve the interaction relations between the two areas well.
