Abstract :
Provides a theoretical analysis of the multigeneration properties of the MPEG video compression algorithms using the theory of generalized projections (GP). Multi-generations of an input video are obtained by successively compressing and decompressing it. The authors show that, under certain assumptions, successive generations can be interpreted as successive projections of the input video onto well-defined sets in a Hilbert space. Then, using the theory of GP, they establish that the multi-generations of I, P, and B pictures in the MPEG algorithms saturate
