  • Abstract
A Fortran-77 based sequential machine interpreted lineament extraction system (SMILES) has been developed. SMILES is a multi-functional package that allows the user to perform tasks such as image display, manual image interpretation, machine interpreted lineament extraction, data management, hardcopy generation and preliminary summarization of lineament data. The program incorporates the directional segment detection algorithm (DSDA) for automatic extraction of lineament information. In the present paper, the authors describe the program design and application results. SMILES has been extensively tested using Landsat MSS data and shaded relief images generated from digital elevation data for the test site in southwestern Japan. The results demonstrate the use of digital elevation data as a potential source for lineament information. Interpretation of air-photo stereo pairs indicate that the machine interpreted features show diagnostic morphology that is characteristic of geological lineaments
