Abstract
The paper proposes a new approach for efficient SAR raw data compression which consists of first compressing the raw data with the block adaptive quantizer (BAQ) and then performing a compression with vector quantizer (VQ) algorithm. This combination is computationally efficient since only one small codebook is needed for the coding which is independent from the data set. A signal-to-distortion ratio better than 12 dB and 6 dB is achieved for a data rate of 2 and 1 bit/sample, respectively
