Abstract :
A new method of JPEG optimization is presented which allows JPEG to be optimized for the minimum visual distortion compression of multitoned images. Projections are done between the closed nonconvex set of possible multitoned images and the closed convex set of images which are allowed when certain frequency domain constraints are applied. This allows the higher frequencies to be adjusted for more efficient JPEG compression with minimum visual distortion. This method may be applied to monochrome images or to individual color planes
