Abstract :
The IEC-60034-2 and IEEE-STD-115 standards are worldwide references for the design, test, specification, and losses determination of hydro generators. Those standards cover many procedures for losses determination, including calibrated machine, retardation, and calorimetric methods, among others. Historically the retardation method has been used to determine losses in field, but nowadays, due to technical and economic issues, along with instrumentation evolution, the calorimetric method has become an interesting option to determine hydro generators losses. The present work contributes discussing the adopted test procedures, heat transfer determination, and proposing a new approach to determine the conductive and convective losses in the rotating generator shaft.
