  • Abstract
A new scanning range finder using the self-mixing effect inside a single-mode IR laser diode has been developed for the acquisition of three-dimensional image data. The optical beam back-scattered by a non-cooperative target into the laser diode cavity causes a strong variation of the optical output power. With such a device, distances were measured from 1 m to 3 m with an accuracy of 0.5% by pixel, without signal processings. By scanning the laser beam, an image size of 100 by 100 pixels has been obtained with a resolution of 0.1%, the target being at a distance of 2 m from this compact self-aligning range finder
