  • Abstract
    An empirically based algorithm has been presented for the simultaneous retrieval of RMS roughness and volumetric moisture of the soil surface layer using quad-polarized radar backscatter. This algorithm was developed using scatterometer data acquired for non-vegetated soils. In the paper, the proposed algorithm is applied to polarimetric SAR imagery obtained by the JPL AIRSAR at P-, L- and C-bands. AIRSAR data obtained from agricultural areas in northern Michigan in June 1991 and eastern Oklahoma in June 1992 are used to demonstrate both the success and the limitations of the technique for both bare and vegetated soils
