Abstract :
With the growth of bandwidth hungry multimedia services in today´s wireless and mobile networks with distinct QoS requirements, there is an immediate need for a resource allocation scheme which takes advantage of the flexible bandwidth requirements of these new traffic classes. In this paper, a call admission control and bandwidth allocation algorithm namely dynamic adaptive resource allocation (DARA), is presented and its performance is evaluated in a wireless cellular network supporting multiple classes of multimedia traffic with varying bandwidth requirements. From the simulation results, it is clear that our scheme achieves better performance with regard to traditional QoS parameters such as call blocking probability while significantly reducing the bandwidth reallocation frequency experienced by a call during its lifetime when compared to other flexible resource allocation schemes. Handoff calls are also efficiently handled in our proposed scheme by a combination of channel reservation and bandwidth borrowing from ongoing calls at heavy traffic loads
