Abstract
The author describes how the ability to design the complex system that is an aero engine has been applied to the redesign of the even more complex system that carries out the process of designing and standardising a new aero engine design-the process carried out by the engineers and business people who create the new product. This work is now well advanced and yielding very significant economies. Its conclusions are considered to be a fundamental basis for the next stage which is to carry out the processes and process sub-elements electronically-EPD or electronic product definition to further reduce nonconformance and collapse the timescale. This paper presents the conclusions of this work in the form of a system architecture which it is proposed is equally applicable to any new product design, indeed to the solution of any problem
