Abstract :
The author describes design problems encountered in the development of DOC (diagnosis of cardiac defects), a medical expert system developed as a training tool for pediatric cardiologists at the Royal Children´s Hospital in Melbourne. The major objective of DOC is to assist trainees in the diagnosis of congenital heart defects in neonates. The author outlines the specifications and guidelines for the system, describes the design problems which were confronted, and describes the features of the system design which were developed to solve those difficulties
