Abstract :
An automatic system for controlling blood glucose level in critically ill patients has been constructed. Closed-loop control of blood glucose; level has been achieved using glucose measurements from the MiniMed(R) Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS). A sliding scale approach determined the required insulin dose. Clinical results showed that patients´ BSL can be maintained in the range of 10-15 mmol/L automatically using a conservative insulin delivery scheme. Analysis of the averaged BSL achieved during manual control and closed-loop control showed that BSL as maintained by the closed-loop system was close to the desired range of 6-10 mmol/L and had less deviation than BSL maintained manually.
