Abstract :
A course in electrical safety in engineering curriculum is very important for graduating engineers desiring to take up a career in electrical industries. At the same time, teaching this course is a very challenging task as the course content must be carefully designed and delivered to maintain the interest level of students and to promote the learning outcomes required. This paper discusses at length the strategies developed at the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications (EET), The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, for improving a Master´s level course in electrical safety by implementing a variety of teaching techniques. This paper especially focuses on the involvement of industry guest lecturers and the students´ perception in including these lectures for improving their learning outcomes. The experience of the industry personnel and their views on the interaction between the industries and the academic universities is also presented. The conclusions highlight the benefits of this approach.
