Abstract :
Free-space optical links, combined with close integration of optoelectronic components with silicon CMOS have a bandwidth potential not limited by aspect-ratio and, in addition, offer a high space-bandwidth product and freedom from frequency-dependant cross-talk. The key aim of the work reported here is to demonstrate that the technology exists to allow Tbit/s scale I/O to silicon VLSI using free-space optical links. The demonstrator is configured as a 64 channel optoelectronic crossbar switch
