Abstract
Premature failures in the contacts of drawout clusters operating in a pulp mill were investigated. The initial view of the operating and maintenance personnel was that loss of contact spring force was the source of the problem. Investigation showed this to be a secondary effect caused by overheating following interruption of the electrical path and consequent arcing. The primary problem was concluded to be vibration and the inability of the assemblies to maintain contact during this.
