Abstract
This article presents the simulation, manufacturing and measurement of the miniaturized ultra wide band IPADtrade (Integrated Passive Device) chip antenna for ultra wide band (UWB) applications. The proposed antenna has a compact size of 8.4*3.l*0.7 mm and has been mounted on an evaluation board. It offers an impedance bandwidth of 2.49 GHz (3 to 5.5 GHz) at VSWR 3:1 and an omnidirectional radiation pattern with maximum gain of around 3 dBi. The Ansoft HFSS 3-D electromagnetic simulator, based on the finite element method (FEM), is used to simulate this planar antenna structure. Simulated and measured results of the impedance bandwidth are presented and discussed. Moreover, simulated and measured results of the antenna radiation characteristics are described. The radiation pattern of the IPADtrade chip antenna is very close to the omnidirectional pattern of a dipole antenna.
