Abstract
Examining the igniting behaviour of the fluorescent lamp in high-frequency operation is proposed. Energy accumulation is used to estimate the ignition condition for the fluorescent lamp. The models of the ballast with the fluorescent lamp before and after ignition are built. Preheating time, igniting voltage and current are derived according to the presented models. These parameters are dependent one another for a constant igniting energy. A test equipment built for igniting the lamp is proposed to examine the lamp behaviour. Interestingly, the required ignition energy is almost constant and independent of operating frequency. Besides, the ballast with variable-frequency drives compared with the constant-frequency one can provide soft-starting and save igniting energy over 20%
