  • Abstract
A new software environment has been created that allows multimedia communication among computers running on different platforms. Evolving standards for interfacing and video coding are used: the concept of interoperability as embodied in the Object Management Group´s common request broker architecture (CORBA) standard specification for data objects has been extended to multimedia objects, specifically MPEG encoded video. Handling of real-time video and audio streams has been incorporated in a demonstration system which uses a commercial implementation of a CORB (common object broker architecture). Sample applications could include video on demand or surveillance systems. We report on architectural aspects and measured performance aspects
