Abstract :
A gyroklystron is being developed to provide 360 GHz radiation for an instrument for pulse and CW Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The parameters of the source, which is in the form of a gyroklystron amplifier, are given. The gyroklystron operates at the second harmonic of the cyclotron frequency, and the drive frequency is 1/2 that of the output. The gyroklystron allows pulsed EPR to be done at more than twice the frequency possible with existing sources, giving a packet of 1-3 coherent pulses at a power of 1 kW. Operation with a duty cycle of about 10%, will be possible. Thus this source is complementary to gyrotron oscillators that are being developed for 140 GHz, CW EPR, in that it has pulsed capability and operates at a higher frequency.
