Study on the fatal crashes of rural roads in mountainous area

Rural roads which are main parts of the national highway network contribute a lot to the prosperous of social and economics of rural area. With the gradual perfection of highway network, the mileage of national highway grows rapidly. It´s of great importance to study and analyze the current safety situation of rural roads, especially those in mountainous areas where the traffic safety problem is increasingly outstanding. The study completed here aimed to conduct an in-depth study of rural roadway fatal crashes in mountainous area. Consequently, this paper collected the files of rural roads fatal crashes in mountainous area of China, and studied the crash type, human characteristics, vehicle characteristics, and road characteristics of crash. A further research based on cross analysis method proposed in this paper was conducted then. Finally, conclusions on what have found were drawn.
