Abstract :
A system has been developed that allows surface discharges to produced over lengths greater than a meter within the laboratory. Relatively low impulse voltages, less than 20 kV, are required to initiate the discharges as there is an initial distribution of charge on the surface. The behaviour of the discharge is shown to be dependant on both the impulse voltage and the distribution of charge on the surface
